I remember when I was a child and my parents were in seminary school, reading Revelations and having so many questions about what it all meant. At the time, I lived in a community of pretty hard-core fundamentalists. It was so scary the way they pointed at recent news events and would claim them as proof that we were in the end times.

We certainly live in interesting and challenging times.

Anyway, I really appreciate your editorial on the subject. Very level headed and thoughtful. Thanks for bringing clarity to a touchy subject.

Gerald, thanks for taking the time to post a reply. I view the Thessalonian correspondence as the main place to go to discuss the pretrib rapture, although I lean toward seeing the Rev 3:10 as giving an exemption of the Church from the tribulation. As to the Greek scholars I am not sure what you mean by "greatest." Both sides have their Greek scholars throughout history. John Nelson Darby, the father of modern dispensationalism, was a top flight Greek scholar in his time and even translated the entire NT. It is like interpretation using just English Bibles -- we are all over the map as we debate, whether it is about English or Greek. So the claim that Greek scholars are on the side of those who believe Christians go through the tribulation does not move me.

Rev. 3:10 has been viewed by many pretrib defenders as perhaps the most important argument for a pretrib rapture. Interestingly, if a person Googles "Famous Rapture Watchers," he will note that the greatest Greek NT scholars interpret it as preservation through the tribulation and not as a promise of a pretrib escape before the tribulation. Why is it that many pretrib defenders still use Rev. 3:10 as an argument for a pretrib rapture? Also Google "Pretrib Rapture - Hidden Facts" and "Pretrib Rapture Dishonesty" for an alternative approach to the rapture debate.

Have you considered using Sam Storms' material? Sam was a graduate of DTS who turned to Reformed, covenant theology. I have yet to read of a DPM who has refuted him. His website is Enjoying God Ministries. I would take his material over Berkhof and the others you also mentioned.

Unfortunately, not many Americans know what the Founding Fathers believed. The secularists have done a good job of propagandizing our culture since the middle part of the 20th century. However, there is a new wind blowing. I think there is a growing interest in what they actually believed and why. Maybe things will be corrected.

Walter,

I have from the beginning been thinking about doing a response. I have to consider the forum for such a response. Thanks for paying attention to my blog.

Professor: I'm only at the beginning of my graduate studies, so I hesitate to offer my teacher advice. However, it seems to me that it might be more helpful to readers of the USAir magazine to read a thoughtful response to the book from a learned Biblical scholar as yourself. Where else will the readers get the opportunity to Hear His side?
