P21, Text, transcription

Main P21 page

The following transcription of P21 comes from B. Grenfell and A. Hunt, The Oxyrhynchus Papyri (London: Egypt Exploration Fund, 1914), vol. 10:12–14. I have not yet verified it line-by-line against the photographs or against the MS itself. Due to font issues on the web, I have employed the following conventions: the b-greek transliteration scheme has been followed in the left column (though in lower case); clearly legible letters are bold black; dotted letters (for uncertain text) are maroon (appears as light brown in some web browsers). Fragments of (unidentifiable) letters are indicated with periods. Overbars (marking abbreviations) are indicated with underlined text here. Where the editors supplied text, it is marked off with square brackets and is in regular (i.e., not bold) text. The editors have also included word breaks in the transcription which are not in the MS but which are reproduced here. I have not, however, included the punctuation or other such marks that they have also added. The right hand column gives the same transcription, but using my Galilee font which enables me to indicate final sigmas and capital letters--though remember that these are only for reading convenience, they are not part of the MS.

These pages use CSS and Unicode UTF-8 encoding; most Greek text is now in Unicode format, though some remnants of the older, non-standard Galilee encoding remain. You should not have difficulties viewing this material if you have a relatively current web browser and a font that contains polytonic Greek. (Even the archaic IE will work, but you ought to be using FireFox! :)
